Pastor Gary Hamrick joined full-time ministry in 1987 as a high school youth pastor, and in 1991, Cornerstone Chapel’s 18 charter members asked him to become the church’s first pastor. Today, Cornerstone is home to several thousand weekly worshipers whom Pastor Gary desires to equip through the teaching of God’s Word, relating Biblical truth to everyday life in practical, relevant, and often humorous ways.
Troy met Jesus when he was just six years old, and that moment marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith and surrender. In high school, his family moved to California, where he started attending Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. It was there he met Rebecca, the girl who would become his wife and ministry partner. For over 30 years, Troy has been faithfully leading, teaching, and pointing people to Jesus, one verse and one chapter at a time.
Athey Creek Church started in 1996 when Brett Meador moved to Portland with his family. After 12 years on staff at Applegate Christian Fellowship, he sensed God calling him to start a church. The fellowship began with a small group of believers who met at Athey Creek Middle School to study through the Bible, verse-by-verse. We continued to study through the Word in this way and the church continued to grow. When it became obvious that we had outgrown the middle school, the Lord, in His perfect timing, provided a warehouse building in Wilsonville. A short five years later, we moved into a building of our own in West Linn.
From the start, the vision for ACC has been clear and focused: We want everything we do to point to Jesus. For us, this means that we keep things simple. Acts 2:42 outlines the model of the early church: “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” We take this verse to heart and make sure that we conform to this pattern in the various ways we minister. We view the church as a refuge, a hospital of sorts, where those who are lost, hurting, or worn out feel welcome. Our hope is that we all find the healing and refreshment we need as we stick to the early church’s example.
In 1965 Pastor Chuck Smith began his ministry at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. Only 25 people had attended. What began as a small chapel grew into a church that seats over 2000 and is filled almost nightly. From the beginning, Pastor Chuck welcomed all—young and old—without judgement, placing his emphasis on the teaching of the Word of God.
God graciously used Pastor Chuck to reach a generation of hippies and surfers; generating a movement of the Holy Spirit that spread from the west coast to the east, bringing thousands of young people to Jesus Christ. Pastor Chuck extended his teaching nationally through The Word for Today radio program, as well as internationally over the Internet at CalvaryChapel.com.
Pastor Chuck went home to be with the Lord on October 3, 2013. Yet, the work that the Holy Spirit started with Pastor Chuck did not end that day; but continues forth in this generation and the next as people continue to seek Christ, teach His Word and avail themselves to the direction and leading of the Holy Spirit.
